Opportunity: Campaign steering group [paid]

Survivors of modern slavery and human trafficking deserve recovery, justice and support. Yet, survivor rights have been undermined by a number of laws and policy changes in recent years. Data secured by After Exploitation shows that most survivors of modern slavery are not accessing counselling, safe housing, or advice through the system meant to support them.

Following feedback from more than 50 stakeholders, including experts with lived experience, we’re planning a campaign calling on the government to guarantee support for all survivors of modern slavery. And we need your help to take action!

In the next few months, we’re building a campaign group and we need freelance campaigners with lived experience to join our steering group. As a steering group member, you will help plan campaign actions and create campaign resources to be used by other activists.

We are recruiting four experts with lived experience of modern slavery, trafficking or exploitation to help shape our campaigns as a freelance campaigner. The work will take four days and offer a fee of £584. This is a paid role requiring the right to work – however, this role is also available as a voluntary position. The deadline is 15th February.

Together, we’ll be working on:

Day one (Thursday 19th February: 10-5pm)

–            Agreeing campaign wording

–            Putting together our fact sheet on survivor support (for MPs)

–            Building a survivor survey so that others can share their views

Day two (Wednesday 25th February: 10-5pm)

–            Planning campaign actions

–            Planning how to promote our campaign materials

Days three and four (to be confirmed!)

We’ll be looking to do follow-up campaign actions in-person, potentially outside Parliament, so the remaining time will be spent recruiting other campaigners and potentially meeting MPs or stakeholders on dates that suit all of us. Travel expenses to Parliament will be paid.

How to apply

If you’d like to be part of the campaign steering group, email Maya@afterexploitation explaining:

–            Why you would like to join the campaign

–             Any examples of previous campaigns work (including as a volunteer or member of the community)

–            What skills can you bring to the campaign

–            Whether you are applying as a volunteer or freelance campaigner

Support available

After Exploitation is a small team with limited resources, but you will be encouraged to check in with Maya (me!) about any needs you may have. This includes everything from access support and wellbeing chats, to tech help when learning how to use new software. Please just let me know what would be helpful, and we will do what we can do to help you continue your campaigning.

There is a small wellbeing budget available to campaigners affected by the issues discussed.

As a self-employed freelancer, you will be responsible for your own taxes which sadly we cannot currently support with. TaxAid is a good source of advice.
