18th December 2025 – Today, After Exploitation is launching a new resource for survivors of modern slavery. The Lived Experience Opportunity Checklist suggests things to consider, and questions to ask, when thinking about taking on an opportunity aimed at lived experience experts. The guide is compiled by Kehinde Ojo, Dr. Ndiweteko Jennifer Nghishitende and Maya Esslemont, with editorial support provided by Kimberley Hutchison and RPC Law.
We know that the most impactful work interrogating injustice against survivors is led, or supported by, survivors. The charity sector, academia, and government agencies are providing more opportunities for survivor leaders and experts by/with lived experience of exploitation, but not all opportunities are created equally. Expectations, payment, and support associated with opportunities like research participation, volunteering or consultancy are not always consistent or transparent.
The checklist covers things to consider when weighing up:
- Volunteering
- Freelancing, self-employment, and/or consultancy
- Work and employment
- Research participation
- Conference attendance
- Fellowships
The resource also includes things to consider when it comes to earning thresholds, and a link to further support and guidance.
This guide is correct at the time of writing (15th December 2025) but changes to law and guidance impacting employment, immigration and modern slavery support is subject to change. Always seek legal advice if in doubt.
Our thanks to RPC Law for providing their expertise.
