Training workshop: Introduction to Freedom of Information (FOIs), 9th July 2025

Due to demand, we’re running a second introduction to Freedom of Information (FOI) workshop this July

Date: Wed July 09 2025

Time: 13:00 – 15:00 (UK)

Description: Freedom of Information (FOI) requests submitted by both professionals and members of the public have helped uncover injustice and win pivotal legal cases, campaigns and headlines.

Join us to learn how you can use Freedom of Information (FOI) requests to make a real impact for your cause. This two-hour training explains how any one of us can use FOIs to get vital information from public authorities and hold them accountable. Whether you’re a journalist, survivor leader, campaigner, or simply curious about transparency and accountability, this event is for you. Many of our case studies will relate to modern slavery and immigration requests, as we are a modern slavery NGO, but professionals across the charity and campaigns sector are welcome!

This training covers:
· The Freedom of Information Act 2000 and how it can support your work
· What kind of information you can request through FOIs
· How to challenge FOI rejections
· How to use FOIs for impact

Please note that this workshop is an introduction to the FOI Act and may not be suitable for people who regularly submit and challenge FOIs.

About After Exploitation: After Exploitation, a non-profit which uses Freedom of Information (FOI) requests to track down hard-to-reach data on the mistreatment and injustice facing survivors of modern slavery in the UK. Their investigations include the first expose outlining the frequency with which survivors of modern slavery are detained under Immigration Powers, wrongful refusals to provide support to survivors, and failures by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) to provide compensation to victims with a legal entitlement to them.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to learn and act!

*’Individuals’ refers to people whose connection to a social cause is not via an organisation or company. This includes freelancers, contractors, or other independent capacities such as individuals acting as lone campaigners. These spots are designed for people who cannot request financial support from a company/NGO in order to attend.
